At Yakima Neighborhood Health Services (YNHS), dedicated healthcare providers work tirelessly to serve our local communities. One such provider is Amelia Rutter, a Family Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) and the YNHS Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Residency Program Director, whose journey in healthcare has been driven by a deep commitment to service and a lifelong love of learning.
“I am a firm believer in the idea that healthcare is a human right,” says Rutter. “I chose to work with underserved communities because I believe that is where there is the greatest need.”
Rutter grew up in Minnesota, where her early experiences shaped her dedication to healthcare. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and later earned her medical training at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She then went on to join YNHS.
“My visit to the clinic for my interview was my first visit to Central Washington. I loved it immediately! It was springtime, so the fruit trees were blossoming, you could see Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams in the distance,” says Rutter.
Drawn first to the beauty of the region, Rutter said it was her commitment to serving underserved communities and the wide range of services offered by YNHS that convinced her to join.
“I have always been impressed by the breadth of services offered by YNHS,” says Rutter. “They look beyond just medical care for individuals and help support housing security, food security, and other services to truly help improve patients’ quality of life.”
With over 12 years of experience as a provider, Rutter has been an integral part of YNHS since 2012. Most recently, she’s helped launch the APP residency program at YNHS.
“When I graduated from nursing school, there were only three Nurse Practitioner residency programs in the country!” shared Rutter. “I would have loved to have had the opportunity to complete one, as it would have made my entry into practice so much smoother. That is why I was so excited by the prospect of starting a residency program here at YNHS.”
The YNHS residency program kicked off in 2023. In August 2024, the residency program graduated its first two residents, and three new residents started in the fall of 2024. Applications to the program open in the fall each year.
But despite her excitement over growing the APP residency program, Rutter says her fulfillment still comes down to treating patients.
“The most rewarding part of my job is always the relationships I can develop with patients,” says Rutter.
Outside of her demanding work at YNHS, Rutter leads a fulfilling life. Her diverse interests reflect her energetic and well-rounded personality, which she brings to both her professional and personal life. She cherishes the proximity to the mountains, where she spends her free time trail running, cross-country skiing, backcountry skiing, hiking, and enjoying the beauty of changing seasons. When she’s not on the trails or skiing, she enjoys traveling (both locally and internationally), reading, knitting, and baking. Additionally, she appreciates the local produce, wine, and beer the Yakima area offers.

Amelia Rutter’s journey in healthcare is a testament to dedication, passion, and a commitment to service. Her work at YNHS not only helps patients receive high-quality care but also fosters a strong foundation for future healthcare providers through the residency program. Whether she’s caring for patients, mentoring new practitioners, or embracing the great outdoors, Rutter exemplifies what it means to be a healthcare provider who truly makes a difference.
